Our Data Bodies at Work Interim Report

Amazon's "Tracked & Targeted" report reveals how extensive surveillance technology creates a dehumanizing work environment in warehouses. Published in 2023 by Our Data Bodies, the study found workers constantly monitored through cameras, badges, scanners, and automated productivity tracking that creates a prison-like atmosphere. This surveillance drives impossible performance demands, causing physical injuries, mental distress, and worker isolation. The report details a caste-like system where predominantly marginalized workers are managed by young, inexperienced supervisors following dashboard metrics with little concern for human limitations. Despite Amazon's claims of prioritizing trust and safety, the surveillance systems achieve the opposite, creating a revolving door of  workers who accept injury and mistreatment rather than risk unemployment in a system designed to track their every move while denying basic human needs like bathroom breaks.
